What is a school-based traineeship?

If you are still at school, you can

  • start to earn a wage
  • gain credit for your years 10, 11 and 12 studies
  • gain experience in the workplace in the career that most interests you.

This is the Australian School-based Apprenticeships program that is backed by the federal and state governments.

How does it work?

  • You still attend school. But you also go to work during the week.
  • You get paid for the work you do.
  • You do specialist vocational training just for your work.
  • You may get credit for the vocational training you did. And you get a jump on the others at school because you have real work experience.
  • To complete a Certificate II part-time, takes two years – usually during 11 and Year 12 and sometimes Year 10.
  • You can move from a School-based Traineeship into a full-time Australian Apprenticeship at any time during or at the end of secondary school.
  • Australian Apprenticeships offer job pathways that combine training for nationally recognised qualifications with employment.
  • Your school careers teacher and MEGT Australia can help put you in touch with employers who care about giving young people a go. And we ensure you are safe in the workplace. We work with your parents or guardian, with your school, with the employer, and most importantly, with you.
